Invented by Leon A. Greenberg, the Alco-Calculator is a cardboard slide-rule, which estimates one’s blood alcohol concentration given the quantity of alcohol consumed, body weight, and hours since beginning alcohol consumption.
For a “device” that cost less than $2 when it was introduced in 1972, it gave very accurate estimates that were comparable to breath analysis devices.
After the first session of what would become an annual Summer School of Alcohol
The Center of Alcohol Studies founded the first Summer School of Alcohol Studies (SSAS) at Yale University in 1943. The School was the focus of several important forces that shaped the alcohol field as it is today. For example, the National Committee on Alcoholism was founded at the SSAS in 1944. The North Conway Institute, as well as other organizations, was also founded at the SSAS.

The Summer School of Alcohol Studies (SSAS) was founded in 1943 as a part of what would become Yale University’s Center of Alcohol Studies. Its first director, E. M. “Bunky” Jellinek, did not intend for the School to exist beyond that first summer and even expected the Center to lose money on the “experiment.”
The 1943 School was attended by 86 students. The following summer, the School’s prospectus included the following statement:
Dr. Selden D. Bacon (1908-1992) was the first director of the Center of Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University, after the Center had to move from Yale University and it found a new home at Rutgers in 1962. While at Rutgers, Bacon garnered support for a specialized library (which was shut down in 2016), the Journal of Studies on Alcohol (now called the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs), and a publication program for the center.
